Layla Lester and Justin Harkness got married on September 2nd, 2017 at the Cathedral of Christ the King and followed up their elegant ceremony with an energetic reception at Monday Night Brewing. We loved working with Layla and Justin because of the sweet and fun essence of their relationship! The nature of their love was definitely captured in the sophisticated yet fun-loving style of their wedding design. Two of our favorite elements of the wedding party’s looks were Layla’s colorful heels and the groomsmen’s classic yet modern black tuxedos.

The whole day was full of laughter and wonderful touches. One of the most memorable moments was the wedding party’s spontaneous midday trip to Chick-fil-A for an afternoon snack after pictures. Two of the sweetest details were Layla’s monogrammed necklace gifted to her by Justin and her edgy “Harklest” custom leather jacket. Layla and Justin’s goal was for the wedding to feel like a celebration for all of the guests, and the live band and eclectic brewery setting absolutely conveyed that.

The florals by Adaptation Floral Design were beautiful, and their band, The Retreat, wowed guests with their arrangements of Layla and Justin’s favorite songs. The crowd danced the night away and Layla and Justin were in the middle of the dance floor the whole time!

It was so special to be a part of such a loving couple’s big day. One of our favorite aspects of the day was witnessing the couple’s excited smiles and sweet first dance – it was SO evident just how much these two are meant to be! The happiness these two share will undoubtedly last a lifetime, and Laura Barnes Photo and Oak & Willow Wedding Films captured it so perfectly!

We are so thankful to Layla and Justin for asking us to take part in the best day of their lives – we love you, Mr. and Mrs. Harkness!

At the end of August, our team had the privilege of attending Gold and Bloom’s Bottles and Blooms workshop to tap into our inner florists! The owner of Gold and Bloom, Jenna Griffin, instructed us on how to create a floral centerpiece from start to finish showcasing some of the most beautiful blooms of the season. Laura Barnes of Laura Barnes Photo was there to capture every moment. We loved that Jenna’s ultimate advice from the beginning of the workshop was to use our personal taste to inspire the shape of our centerpieces. Some people had rounder centerpieces, while other centerpieces were nontraditional in shape. Some people were drawn to symmetry, while others enjoyed creating asymmetrical arrangements. Once we chose the shapes we had in mind, Jenna invited us to forage from the yard to select additional greenery or flowers. She challenged us to mix textures and to add pops of colored greenery to bring unique flavor to our designs.

After we collected all of the greenery we wanted to use, Jenna instructed us on how to create the foundation of the arrangement, placing greenery so that the shape and height we wanted for our pieces was present before we added any flowers. Jenna walked us through the various flowers she provided for the arrangements, explaining which played more of a supporting role in an arrangement and which typically sat higher and sprung out further, giving more height or width to the piece.

Jenna encouraged us to place our “wow” factor accents in the arrangement before adding all of the flowers. For her, it was a single twig extending sideways from the piece. For others, it was a statement flower in the center of the vase or a cluster of berries.

With that, we began creating. Using the floral shears, floral foam, and charming vases Jenna provided us, we listened to music and bounced ideas off of one another as we designed our masterpieces. Our team had a combination of approaches to putting together our arrangements, each having a final product with a different shape, fullness, color palette, and mood.

We had a wonderful time learning about the art of floral design and cannot wait to attend another workshop. Although we don’t offer floral design, this workshop allowed us to get more insight into how our clients’ personalities and tastes can be represented in their wedding day florals. Thank you, Jenna, for your expertise and for such a fun and inspiring experience!

Hi friends!

It was almost 6 years ago (whoa) when I started planning styled shoots alongside new vendor friends to try to get my name out in the wedding industry.

Since then, we’ve had editorials featured on many blogs & in magazines. I’ll list a few of my favorites for you to see!

Love of My Life, featured on Green Wedding Shoes

A Storied Love, featured in Southern Weddings V9

Tuscan Skies, featured in The Celebration Society

When Natalie of 4 Corners Photography asked me about speaking at a workshop for those who are interested in learning how to successfully plan a styled shoot, I was so excited. This is such a needed discussion, especially for new vendors and planners.

Here is a link where you can find more information. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Personally, I have a hard time pushing myself without being in a class environment. Classes have always been my best option, because I can’t just stop before the class is done like I can with a regular workout. When you own your own business, it’s hard to step away from work to take care of yourself. The same thing is true when you’re planning a wedding. You have so much on your to-do list that it’s hard to stop, and just focus on you.

Pure Barre is not only an amazing way to tone your body (it’s done wonders for mine!), it’s also super fun. The music starts really high energy as you focus on working out every part of your body for 55 minutes. I’ve been sore in places that I didn’t realize I had muscles. Sounds terrible – but it’s a GOOD feeling.

As you near the end of class, the music becomes relaxing. Confession: I’ve almost fallen asleep during some of our stretches. I need that wind down at the end of a workout. It’s so therapeutic for me and is an amazing start to my day. I feel focused and ready to tackle anything.

I hope that many of you can take advantage of the Bridal Week deal. It’s for brides & bridesmaids, and one bride will win a “barre-ty” (private class) for 15 of her girlfriends. Just remember to invite your planner since you love her so much. (A-hem! Just kidding – maybe.)

StudioWed has been a great home for my company since the year began, and I was thrilled to get to design the window display table for spring and for the Weddings Unveiled Launch Party! I wanted the table to be moody, romantic, and anthropologie-inspired (my favorite place!). Thanks to Jonathan and Kaye for these gorgeous photos!

Bloomin’ Bouquets put together the perfect springy florals. You can’t go wrong with pale pink peonies and clematis. 🙂 I loved the unique containers and cloches.

Papered Wonders floored me with the beautiful floral inspired paper goods.

After seeing our inspiration board, Nuage Designs suggested their platinum ruffle linen. Isn’t it amazing? Loved the mauve napkins, too! Napkins are always a great option for a pop of color. We loved this new china option from Classic Party Rentals – simple and organic. Right up my alley! Aren’t their dark wood Tuscan chairs amazing, too?

Unique Event Elements brought in stunning draping in a charcoal gray along with blush uplighting (so gorgeous!). Miss Milly’s vintage chairs, frame, and birdcage added a pop of personality. The frame was decorated with foraged spring branches and served as a fun welcome to guests arriving to the Weddings Unveiled party.

My favorite part of the evening was getting to meet the editor of Weddings Unveiled, Brooke, in person. My husband Matt and I loved chatting all things with Brooke… from stocks and investing to wedding inspiration, she’s a wealth of knowledge with the kindest disposition. MMD loves you and Weddings Unveiled, Brooke! (insert picture I wish I’d gotten here 😉 )

In other news, the food was delicious (thanks Simply Catering!). It was so fun to see how the inspiration was translated by other planners (loved your table, Lemiga Events). A Pinch Bakery‘s cake pops were killer, as usual. Seeing our vendor friends was the perfect end to a busy April week.

Happy Spring!

This week, Amanda Claire and Thomas’s big day was featured on Style Me Pretty’s front page!! How cool is it that Desiree Hartsock (The Bachelorette) had her wedding featured right after theirs? (I am a Bachelor fan, so this is a big deal.) Basically, AC and Thomas are famous in my book.

I’m thrilled to finally share this wedding and so thankful to have been a part of it! See the feature by clicking here. Thank you to my friend Julie Cate for the most beautiful photos. See the full vendor list on the feature page.
